  2. Might be more like blog material, might end up as too much ranting, whatever... I am losing faith in Nintendo. Not in the business sense, as in not believing the Wii U will sell or somesuch, but in their handling of franchises. Losing faith in their will to experiment. In their will to cater for more than Mario or Zelda players, as well as in their will to cater to non-Japanese players. Think back to E3 2004. What springs to mind for you? For me, it's Reggie, it's kicking ass and taking names, it's the last part of his intro "...and we're about making games". To mind come the trailers for the likes of Metroid Prime 2 or Resident Evil 4. To mind also comes the introduction of the DS, which was as much of a gamble that they initially positioned it as a third pillar besides GCN and Game Boy. Obviously it was so successful that they got rid of the GB, although "laid to rest" might be a nicer choice of words. And, of course, "I am not Link, but I do know him" - Miyamoto with sword and shield in hand, right after the room exploded after the surprise announcement of a new, realistic Zelda game for the Cube, which we now know as Twilight Princess. Nowadays, tho? They're playing it safe. They might still be experimenting and gambling with hardware, to an extend (after already carving out a niche for touchscreens 8 years ago, then it getting widened by Nintendo and certain cellphone manufacturers), but on the software front... at least for the big budget retail titles, it feels like all we ever get from them are Mario games, as well as maybe Zelda and Donkey Kong and such. Oh the bloody Mario games. Granted, they're usually good, but do we need so many of them? New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. And that's on top of my head, and in the last, what? Five years? And that's disregarding sports titles and Mario Karts. Additionally (again, all how I personally feel) the games are getting easier and easier, unless there's something broken about them that makes them unplayable when not constantly mending them - hate me for it if you must, but I'm looking at Skyward Sword's controls here. They are awful. Also broken: Mario Kart 7's AI, but I already ranted about that in another thread. Games that require actual skill, constant application of said skill, those are getting rarer and rarer these days. Thinking of F-Zero here, again as ranted about before. Now, the thing about Japanese and non-Japanese players... two things I'd like to mention here. One: Japanese storytelling and characterizations are great where they fit and when they're well done, like in many JRPGs. They don't fit in something like... say... Metroid. Not when it contradicts (mostly) everything we've seen or heard about a character before. Backstories and stuff are fine, but Sakamoto's storytelling ruined Other M. Some other issues didn't help the game either, most of which go back to the point of games getting easier (overzealous auto-aiming, energy and missile recharging, etc., etc. plus a freaking tutorial). Better not open that can of worms any further again, tho, enough has been said about that. Two: That's obviously not their fault, but from all I've heard, Japanese are prone to motion sickness, which is why ex. 2D Mario games there sell better than 3D Mario games. That might be a reason why there's not much in terms of really fast gameplay in Nintendo games anymore, again thinking of F-Zero. F-Zero GX sold just over 100.000 copies in Japan, while it sold at least 250.000 in each, the US and the PAL territories, because it became a Player's Choice title there, according to Wikipedia at least. Argh, I gotta stop ranting. I don't want to come across as an old, naysaying fool stuck in the past or somesuch, but all those developments over the last 6+ years are troubling. I'm missing the Nintendo of the GCN and GBA era, that of the N64 and Game Boy era, that of even earlier. I mean, if they ex. hadn't given one quirky pair of games on a nearly obsolete system a chance in the mid-90s, the world would be without a certain franchise of 649 monsters... ...alright, I'm done, it's late and I'm tired and I really need to stop myself from writing more nonsense. Awaiting either indifference, or hate for that Skyward comment.
  3. Bumping this thread because... it pains me to say it, but Miyamoto just doesn't get it! - About FZero, he's surprised players want more of this series. Gamekult: After a quick survey on Twitter, one of the game French gamers miss the most is F Zero. Nobody really understands why Nintendo hasn't made a new one since 2004. Is there a chance we can see it back on Wii U? Miyamoto: :eyes open wide: I am really pleased to hear Twitter's opinion, because since the first episode on SNES many games have been made but the series has little evolved. I thought people had grown weary of it. I'd like to say: Thank you very much and try to wait by playing Nintendoland's FZero minigame. I am also very curious and I'd like to ask those people: Why FZero? What do you want that we haven't done before? (Gamekult via NeoGAF via GoNintendo) Full HD, 60 FPS and online play, or are you telling me you've done this before?! Plus a track editor that doesn't require a stupidly expensive, obsolete add-on for a console from three generations ago, or has been crammed into a portable version of the game which - like the aforementioned add-on - hasn't been released outside of Japan? You've done this already? IN WHICH GAME?! <.< F-Zero doesn't need to evolve, not every game or series needs to - some series just need a new release!

Also, it's 4 AM here, so here's just a really quick rundown of the controls and stuff... Q/E/W/A/S/D is camera control, default mode is rotation. Hold Shift to change to camera translation, hold Space to speed movement up. Numpad 7/9/8/4/2/6 is light source movement. Lighting preview is NOT accurate. Right-click the 3D view for a menu where you can reset camera and light position, as well as dis-/enable the lightbulb marker. Numpad 5 also resets the light position. Currently supported for opening are Wavefront .obj models and "MapInfdev intermediate" models (= what this program, or rather the model handling library I'm writing, converts everything into internally; gotta rename them tho), supported for saving are F3DEX2 binary files and, again, MapInfdev intermediate. F3DEX2 saving asks for RAM segment and base offset, then converts model and materials, saves them, and gives you a rundown of texture and display list addresses in the resulting file. Right-clicking a group in the treeview allows you to change some flags, currently backface culling, lighting and texture coord generation (the reflection stuff I mentioned a while ago). Right-click a material allows you to change its color, horizontal and vertical texture wrap, and the combiner mux it uses after conversion (nearly untested, leave on auto-detect unless you want to test it ). The preview is, as usual, not necessarily indicative of how the converted model will look like in-game (lighting, texgen especially). Also note that this specific tool is meant for object models, not maps or somesuch, which is why it only creates textures and display lists - no collision, no headers, nothing of the sort. And finally note that I haven't yet tried to view anything this program converted in an actual game/emulator, only the old libbadRDP-based DLViewer. It's reasonably accurate but obviously not 100%, so you might encounter glitches I haven't seen during my "offline" or "dry" testing or whatever you wanna call it. All that said, wonder if this'll result in more feedback that for some other stuff I've released, G2Map or whatever... tho this might be a bit more useful anyway, so here's hoping.

  6. I wish I could give you some advice, because - as cliche as that may sound - I can imagine how you feel. I've got a social phobia (which according to Wikipedia is apparently an aka for social anxiety disorder, good to know) as well, although from what you describe, it seems that you're somewhat worse off in terms of the phobia's severity. I do have some true friends I'm in more or less constant contact with, meeting every week or so, although I currently don't have a job, either. Same for a girlfriend, or, ...well, not anymore, not in years.

  9. Finally added to the GUI. Was actually a bit more work than I had assumed, ex. regarding the enumeration of emulated serial devices, storage of the selected device type in the configuration, etc... ...yet the resulting GUI is awfully simple. The "Configure" button doesn't even do anything yet, because the printer doesn't need any configuration!

  11. Alright, compatibility assessment: Game Boy Camera, printing photos? Works. Pokemon Crystal, Pokedex entries? Works. Note how they're split into two; the game sends what is Page 2 in-game separately. Pokemon Pinball, the hi-score tables? Works. Pokemon Trading Card Game, Pokemon cards? Works. Note here that at least part of this image sequence is RLE compressed (probably the illustration; luckily RLE's really simple). Also, again, the card is split into separate images. Haven't tested anything else yet (ex.     Koji Kondo. To be honest, I don't really care about Uematsu's work outside of Chrono Trigger (the bulk of which was done by Yasunori Mitsuda, in fact). Keeping with the theme (hoho): Junichi Masuda or Yuzo Koshiro?

  16. Not exactly a game or anything, but I mostly use these for gaming these days, so... A Sony FD Trinitron KV-21FX30E (21" / ca. 55 cm diagonal) flat-screen CRT television, with manual and remote... for free! It has apparently just been standing around, taking up space for several years, and was supposed to be thrown away, so I gladly took it in Two SCART inputs (RGB and S-video capable), front composite RCA/cinch input, RCA/cinch stereo sound output; supports several kinds of PAL and NTSC video standards. RGB signals look really nice on this thing, image is quite sharp. Not to mention, I can finally play my Famicom clone with colors! Still need to give the thing a good cleaning, tho - the case is pretty dusty, the remote is rather dirty as well...

  19. I don't want to commit myself to a project - I mean, look how well that's working for my own projects! <.< - but feel free to ask me about Gen 2. It's been a while since I actively hacked it (like 8 or 10 years?) but I've kept up with it to an extend, so... maybe there's something I can help with.
  20. Do we have one of these threads already? I hope not... Anyway, as the thread title says, what game(s) are you currently playing? I'm spending most of my gaming time right now with Etrian Odyssey for the DS. It's a 2007 first-person dungeon crawler RPG by Atlus, set mainly in a gigantic dungeon of 100 or so floors. You start out by creating a party of up to six characters of different classes, then assigning their initial 10 skill points. Then you start exploring the dungeon floor by floor... and without a map. Or rather, you do the mapping yourself on the touchscreen. You note down pathways, doors, the stairs up and down the floors, etc., and believe me, while it might sound tedious, you'll need it. A good map is one of the key points for survival in this game. Outside the dungeon, in town, you sell your loot, buy new weapons, armor, medicine and the like, accept quests, party management, rest and save, etc. It is pretty hard, tho. Especially in the beginning, when everyone's still on Level 1, dealing only puny damage to enemies. However, I feel like that difficulty makes it all the more rewarding in the end - the feeling of finally tearing through a F.O.E. (some abbreviation that stands for the monsters visibly roaming on the map, ex. bosses and their underlings) that once had you trembling, had you reaching for medicine and healing spells every round, left you beaten and battered - if not worse -, that's just great. A sense of accomplishment I wish more contemporary games would instill into me.

  25. I feel like the one important thing that's missing, which would make me want to actively participate, would be the battle agreement thing. Right now, I'm like "if I don't want to play, no one should be able to make bank off of my non-participation". If Shadow Fire could somehow work that one thing into the script, I believe it would already improve the whole thing quite a bit. EDIT: Alternatively, disabling attacking of offline users would help, but be a less optimal solution than mutual agreement IMO.
