There is no such thing as a favorite flavor. There is only pie. In all seriousness, you're insane if you dont like Pecan.

Nice bonus for early adopters. That Wii backwards compatibility mode looks really tacked on... hopefully its as easily exploited as a real wii is. At the very least, this particular exploit doesnt look likely to be patched considering how long its been out. Makes me wonder if native homebrew will occure via breaking out of the sandbox rather than through a purely native approach, at least initially.

For me, its impossible to pick among the stuff I like, as I like them all for very different reasons. So rather than pick favorites, these are just a few random ones that poped into my head upon reading the topic. Link's Awakening - Eagle's Tower. It may be blind nostalgia talking as LA was my first Zelda, but I always thought it had the best soundtrack in the series. Metroid Prime 2 - Torvus Bog. Very atmospheric track, fits perfectly with its environment. Perfect Dark - Chicago Stealth Silent Hill - Dead End. I like this one for a drastically different reason than the other stuff in this post. This track, to me, sums up how Silent Hill approaches its "music". Rather than focus on making something that sounds good, it focuses on something that perfectly matches the scene you're experiencing, enhancing the tension and fear that the player is experiencing. When playing, you dont even notice the soundtrack, it perfectly blends into the background. Its a level of immersion that few games can match, and if not for this game series I dont know that I'd consider sound nearly as important as I do now. This soundtrack taught me that music can make or break a game. Even listening to it now, I can vividly see the scene it goes with despite not having played the original Silent Hill in years, and I can say the same for other parts of the soundtrack. Because of that, while other stuff here was chosen semi-randomly this one actually is one of my favorites despite not being something I'd listen to independently of the game.

First off, you're not alone on not liking the motion controls of Skyward Sword. I found them infuriating as well. I strongly agree with you, Nintendo feels like they're coasting. But I dont think that they're focusing on their core franchises to the exclusion of others because that would imply their core stuff is continuing to get better. I'm not a big Mario fan and as such havent played anything past Sunshine so I cant comment on that. However, in my option their Zelda games have gotten worse with each release. The last truly great Zelda was Wind Waker... from there we've had a hollow Ocarina of Time rehash in Twilight Princess and a regression to the Mario 64 days in Skyward Sword. In my option having an explorable overworld is a key component to any Zelda game, so to throw that out completely just boggles my mind. Same reason I thought the two DS Zelda games were appallingly bad, I know a few people who dismissed those constraints and the other flaws to being a result of using a handheld system, but that argument is simply fase when you consider the gameboy era Zelda handhelds were at or above ALttP. I think, though, that Nintendo is simply a casualty of a bigger issue. The cost of producing games in general has risen to a point where publishers dont want to put anything out that's even remotely likely to fail. In an attempt to pull in bigger crowds, many companies are putting in less effort and watering down their ideas because they know that people will buy them like that. Saves them money on development as well, so their profit margin is bigger in addition to merely being an attempt to get a bigger crowd. I've found that many games produced from the start of this console generation onward just havent appealed to me, and it didnt hit me until very recently when I started playing through a PC game called System Shock 2. The company behind Bioshock largely billed the game as System Shock's spiritual successor, but its clear that Bioshock is actually heavily watered down. There's no true inventory like in System Shock, there's no stats, weapons dont jam, ammo and health is plentiful, research is greatly simplified... they took the great gameplay of a 90s hidden gem and removed anything that gave the game challenge in the name of attracting those with low attention spans. Its not just this one example, pretty much everything out there is homogenized to the point of requiring barely any effort because it means more people would be able to play them, which in turn means more money. Nintendo ties into this in that they found a new audience in the Wii, and sales numbers tell them that if they want to keep making money at the rate they currently are, they need to put their other games on level playing fields. They also need to rely on existing brand awareness. Therefore, more Mario, more Zelda, more Wii Sports. They cant bring out F-Zero, because most people have no idea what that is. Its not a guaranteed seller. I think the only real solution for this is if some big crash happens, like Pacman did for Atari back in the early 80s. And I think that road is approaching, given how said Wii audience is turning more to touchscreen based gaming in their cell phones and tablets. Once that audience leaves, Nintendo will either be forced to go back to their more experimental roots or die a slow death as they burn through their money. Of course, that may only bring them up to the position of other companies floundering with their yearly generic and mindless first person shooters. Not sure we'll see an end to that one any time soon.

Correction: It was the basis for Silent Hill the movie. Silent Hill the game series has snow, not ash. As a huge fan of the games, it drives me nuts whenever someone claims the snow is ash, so I felt the need to point that out. No offense to anyone who enjoyed the movie, but as an adaptation its terrible as there's almost no indication those involved in its production actually played the source material. Still looks like an interesting place. I'd love to check it out someday if I got a chance.

To get this thread going again, quick google search says Rubedo So, fellow insects, SHODAN or GLaDOS?
-
Sunshine. Haters gonna hate. Microwave or Oven?
-
Jaguar. I've never used either, but it had a far superior version of Doom from what I hear and that has to count for something. Manual or automatic transmission?
-
Silly Putty. When I was younger I found how it could copy ink printed stuff fascinating. Goldeneye or Perfect Dark (n64 versions of both, not the Wii cash-in or the poor 360 launch title)?
-
3DS. I think both have poor libraries at the moment, but the PSP had pretty poor support long term next to the DS and I dont see the Vita doing much better. As is, the PSP only did as well as it did because it was easily modable. Speakers or headphones?
-
Computer-played sequences. Yes, it sounds artificial, but that can be used as an advantage like in old 8/16-bit music. Also far easier to loop. Linear or open world?
-
Sorry, I mean no offense to drummers. I meant more that I'm not particularly fond of the insturment itself. The bass can be turned down. Drums... not so much volume control. Flash drive, assuming its USB2/3. Everything has a USB port, not everything has an SD card slot. Desktop (far more expandable) or Laptop (far more portable)?
-
Bass. Living with a drummer will give you a bias against them. NES/Famicom or Gameboy (BW or Color)?
-
Young Link. Toon Link would have been my answer if not for the two DS Zeldas. Half-Life or Portal?
-
The last game you played is now your life, how is it?

Hm... on the bright side, I get to burn people. Yay, fire! On the down side, I have fat men trying to push me around, Texans hiding behind their toys until I leave and people with masks are trying to stab me. I dont think I'll be alive much longer. Pyro in Team Fortress 2. -
This... this changes everything! Awesome work!
