Silver didn't stop running until he'd fully scaled the hill back up to Ecruteak City. Once at the top, he dropped to his knees and slammed a fist into the ground.

"What the hell's wrong with me?!" he hissed. "Why am I getting so soft?"

Snappy remained silent, before letting out a soft noise when his trainer quickly stood and rushed towards Ecruteak again.

I need to train more... I'm not sure how much Ethan was putting into our last battle. Even with a type difference, his Typhlosion has a level advantage... and I nearly beat it. Ergh... I need to stop thinking about Ethan and his Pokemon. It makes me feel funny.

Arriving back at Ecruteak, Silver headed for the Pokemon Center, greeting Nurse Joy and asking for accommodation. The nurse gave a smile, handing Silver a card key, ironically, for the same room he had shared with Ethan before.

Somebody up there hates me.

Taking the card key and giving his thanks, Silver went into the room, and flopped back onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling.

Why is he so insistent about me smiling? More importantly... why can I not stop thinking about him?

Silver was still asleep, deciding to give himself an extra bit of rest. He did need to catch up a bit on sleep regardless. Snappy was still peacefully snoozing next to the red-haired boy.

You shall witness one day the revival of me and my Team Rocket.

Opening his eyes, Silver glanced around slightly, before letting out a sigh and dropping his head back on the pillow.

"Great..." he grumbled to himself. "I had to go and remember that again..."

When Ethan had finally made it to her, Jasmine gave a smile.

"I would like to thank you for your help at the Lighthouse..." she said in her soft voice. "But this is different. Allow me to properly introduce myself. I am Jasmine, a Gym Leader. I use the... clang! Steel type! Do you know about the Steel type? They are very hard, cold, sharp, and really strong! Um... I'm not lying."

Holding a Monster Ball out in front of her, Jasmine gave another smile, before releasing her first Pokemon, a Magnemite.

The battle continued, and despite Jasmine's type disadvantages, she still had some clever moves up her sleeve. The Magnemites were taken care of relatively quickly, but she unveiled her final Pokemon, Steelix.

"Go, Steelix!" she called out. "Sandstorm!"

The giant Steel Pokemon let out a roar, before whipping up an intense sandstorm.

Jasmine was quick with her reflexes. Anticipating such a move, a grin crossed her face.

"Steelix!" she called. "Dig underground!"

The steel-snake was quick in following the command, digging underground at lightning fast speed, the flame attack flying over the hole it had made.

-----

Silver finally awoke, giving a big yawn. Snappy was awake and seemed to be staring blankly around the room.

He's been like that since Ethan brought him back.

A rumbling noise was heard from underground, before Steelix suddenly came shooting up from underneath Cynder.

-----

"Well..." the red-haired teen mumbled. "I guess we should head out. We've lots of training to do. We'll train for a while in Mt. Mortar... then head back to Goldenrod City. Come, Snappy."

Walking towards the door, Silver glanced back, watching as Snappy vacantly began walking behind him.

What's... wrong with you?

As the sandstorm continued to whip around the arena, Jasmine showed her determination.

"Now, Steelix!" she called. "Iron Tail!"

The massive Pokemon complied, tail glowing brightly, before swinging it down at the approaching Pokemon. However, even with all that power, Cynder was coming in way too fast, and the flames only intensified its attack. Steelix stood no chance against the attack, and crashed to the ground, knocked out. Jasmine gave a smile and recalled her Pokemon, giving words of encouragement. Turning back to Ethan, her smile widened as she held out the Mineral Badge, the raven-haired teen's newest prize.

Having arrived at Mt Mortar, Silver watched as Snappy slowly trudged up to him. Kneeling down, the red-haired teen's eyes scanned over the water Pokemon.

"Alright..." he said, concern seeming evident in his voice. "What's wrong?"

The Croconaw glanced down before glancing over his shoulder, back in the direction of Olivine City.

"Is it Ethan?" Silver asked, breathing a sigh of relief as Snappy shook his head. "Okay... is it... Cynder?"

The way the Croconaw tensed up indicated that Cynder was the cause. Silver gave a grin.

"Don't worry," he chuckled. "You'll evolve too and be even stro...nger?"

Silver trailed off his Pokemon shaking his head again. The look on his face seemed a little lonely. It was as if...

"I get it now..." he mumbled. "You miss him... you care for him... don't you?"

Snappy looked down at the ground.

Once Cynder was out of his monster ball, Ethan smiled and stroked his fur. "Let's keep going, okay boy?" Cynder nodded, giving a faint smile. "And don't worry so much, we'll see them again." Ethan smile became teasing while Cynder blew smoke at him as a playful warning. "What? I know you and I know how you think." The raven haired teen shrugged as they left the center.

Silver gave one of his rare smiles, placing a hand on the Croconaw's head.

"Hey," he said softly. "Don't worry. I'm sure we'll see them again. I mean, after all... Ethan is..."

Ethan is...

Trailing off, Silver slowly glanced down, before standing up again. His face was expressionless, although a slight rosy tint coloured his cheeks.

"C'mon..." he muttered. "We have to continue training."

Some time later, Silver had just completed his exhausting training, watching with pride as Snappy began to glow.

He's evolving...

The glow became bright, before dulling down to show a Feraligatr. Silver gave a smirk.

"I'm in trouble now..." he snickered. "You're so much bigger than I am... I better make sure you don't try and eat me."

Snappy glanced down at his trainer and with a fangy grin, chomped his jaws together.

"Okay, okay..." he snorted. "No need to threaten me. Anyway, let's go. We'll head back to Goldenrod City."

The newly evolved Feraligatr watched as Silver walked outside the cave, sweatdropping as his trainer collided with someone.

"Oof..." he grunted, falling to the ground. "Why me? Hey, you'd better get off me or I'll... huh?"

Looking up at his assailant, he came face to face with someone very familiar.

"E-Ethan?" he stammered. "C-could you... please get off me?"
