Welcome to Zeth & Naxy's guide to setting up PJ64 and texture packs. I have provide my Newb pack just for you guys. This will have everything you need to start loading/playing with those texture packs! icon_e_biggrin.gif (except the texture packs themselves)

Newb Pack

IMPORTANT: If you've already downloaded Project64 before and just need to get Rice's Video Plugin working, see the note at the bottom of this guide!

Provided below are the steps and screenshots on how to load textures. Enjoy! icon_e_biggrin.gif

Step 01) Take the pack and unrar it, using the program WinRAR. If you don't have WinRAR, you can also use 7zip, which is absolutely free, and can be downloadedhere. For the sake of this guide, extract the pack to C:Program Files

Once you've extracted the files, you will have a folder called Project64. That is your Emulator folder, which contains the emulator Project64.

Now, you'll need to configure a few things to get started; first, you should set your directories. Go to the Project64 folder and run Project64. When it loads up, select Options, and then select Settings (or press ctrl+T). The following window should pop up:

First things first, go to the Options tab and uncheck "Hide Advanced Options" if it is checked and select apply, and close the window. Then, reopen it and click on the Directories tab, and it should give you a list of all of your directories, as shown above. Make sure your directories are as follows:

Plugin Directory: I recommend using $AppPathPlugin, but if you want to put your plugins somewhere else, you can specify a new folder.

Rom Directory: If you already have any Roms downloaded into a specific folder, you can either use that folder as your Rom directory by selecting "Last folder that a rom was opened from" or by copying the location of the folder into the address bar. Otherwise, use the the default option.

N64 Autosaves: Use $AppPathSave.

Instant Saves: Use $AppPathSave.

Screen Shots: User $AppPathScreenshots.

Another useful thing to do is go to the Shell Integration tab and check the .v64, .z64, .n64 and .rom extensions, as shown below. That way, you can double click on your Roms and PJ64 will automatically load them for you.

Lastly, while you're in the Project64 folder, it might be a good idea to bookmark it so you can access this folder easily in the future. Do so by clicking (in the Project64 folder, not the application itself) Favorites -> Add to Favorites. Or, you can right click on the Project64 folder and select Create Shortcut. Then, drag that shortcut onto your desktop for quick and easy access. Now you should be done configuring Project64 itself, so let's start with configuring the video plugin by downloading a texture pack, say Zeth's for example, you download it, and have no idea what to do, right? Well, open up Project 64 and locate your plugins folder. Inside there, there should be a folder called Hires_Texture.(I've noticed in Project64 1.7 its located Plugins>GFX>Hires_Texture)

Step 02) Copy the unrared texture pack into the Hires_Texture Folder. You will then need to create a folder that matches the name of the ROM you are playing, to find this out, load up the game in Project64 and check the name of the window, it will show what the game's name is. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time should have a folder that says "The Legend of Zelda", Majora's Mask should have a folder that says "Zelda Majora's Mask", etc. So, create a folder for the game you want to load textures for, and drag and drop your texture folder into that folder.

Step 03) Okay now, The textures will almost be ready to load. icon_e_biggrin.gif

We need to fix a few options so the emulator loads them, and load them correctly, so open the emulator but do not start a game. Go to options and down at the bottom of the drop down menu, click settings. Make sure your Video Plugin is set for Rice's Video Plugin 6.1.1 Beta 10. If it is, no worries and exit out of that window and back to the main emulator. If you need to change it, DO NOT USE THE DEBUG ONE.

Image6.png

Step 04)Okay, so start the game up, as soon as you begin to see stuff for the game, go to options> Configure Video Plugin.

There is a few things you need to change which will improve the loading textures, and enabling the loading textures. Please go to these tabs below and change the options as they are in these pix. The other tabs, leave them as is.

Step 05) Click apply, and that's it. You're done, it should load up the textures with no problem. Now there are certain problems I have seen with people's computers, who have old graphics cards. If that is the case, textures may not load correctly, or even at all. Which in this case, this is something I cannot help you with. I hope you enjoy the tutorial and hope it helped you guys. More tutorials are on their way. icon_e_biggrin.gif

If you have already installed Project64

What you'll need to do in this case is simply download the .dll files for Rice's Plugin attached to this post and extract them to your Plugins folder for Project64, and you can follow the directions from Step 3. Don't worry about any of the setup stuff for the emulator, as that should already be done! icon_e_wink.gif
