Warning

This fanfiction contains:

  • Shounen'ai (boys in love with other boys)
  • Character death

This is based on a VOCALOID song of the same name, although there have been a few changes. Instead of falling in love with Rin, a girl from outside, Len falls in love with a young boy. It's actually kind of a sad song. Anyway, enjoy.

Prisoner

One time, in a certain place
A single prisoner
Fell in love with someone beyond the fence
It's painful... so painful...

I had no idea why I was imprisoned there in the first place. I hadn't committed any crimes, but the soldiers came and took me away. My freedom taken, I had been there for quite some time, but then one day I saw him, and I realised, I, Len Kagamine, was there for a reason. To meet him.

Robbed of freedom

I suffer persecution
Between you, and the dirty me
There's a difference... a difference...

It was by a strange twist of fate that I even had a pencil and paper, but I decided to use it to my advantage. After all, they were fair to us if we behaved, and since I liked art, they let me draw, though I never got any colours. Always black. This time, it suited my needs, as I began writing a letter.

"To the boy on the other side,
I'm not sure why, but upon seeing you, my heart skipped a beat.
I want to talk to you as much as I can.
I hope that I don't offend you.
I am after all, a prisoner.
If you don't want to talk to me,
I can understand.

Best wishes...
Prisoner X196705"

There was only one way I could get it to him without ruining it. There were many updrafts around, so giving a slight grin, I folded the letter into a paper airplane. Taking aim, I let it fly, watching in delight as it flew over the fence.

We wrote letters
Folding paper aeroplanes
In order to send them over the wall to each other
Fly away! Fly away!

Giving a sigh, I watched with intent as it flew in front of him. His brown eyes widened slightly as he caught the plane in his hands, before glancing over in my direction. I couldn't help but give a shy smile. He smiled back before noticing there was writing on the paper. Unfolding the plane, he read my letter before staring back up at me. His smile widened, before he took out a pen and paper from his pocket. Obviously, he was an art fan as well. Writing on the paper, he finished up, before folding it up like I did, and sending it back to me, fidgeting with his light brown hair afterwards.

Ah, I'll say that one day
I'll be freed
Even if I know...
...that it's a lie.

My heart pounded as I opened the letter, and what I read made me misty-eyed.

"Prisoner X196705,
I'm glad you feel that way, because I must tell you... I've been watching you for some time now.
You never noticed because you were always working on your drawings, so I decided to draw you. It's in my art book.

I've loved you from the day I first saw you.
I hope we can keep talking, and that you one day can get out.
Love always...
The boy on the other side."

I gave a goofy grin. I now realised that I had fallen in love with the boy who could roam so freely.

If I had you, whatever lies there were
I felt that they all could become true
"Come over here and speak with me"
I could never convey this thought

We spoke to each other softly, but I was suddenly called away, to return to my room. I very softly heard him say he'd be back tomorrow. I couldn't help but smile.

However
Looking at you
It is my small happiness
For tomorrow

-----

Several months passed, and I would often see the boy I fell in love with. Whether it was me writing him a letter, or the other way around, I felt happy. I glanced down at my treasure, many paper planes with his letters written on them.

Every day since then
For many days and months
Your paper aeroplanes have been
My joy, my joy

With a smile, I put them in my special place, before walking outside. I knew he'd be coming that day. I wasn't disappointed, because as I walked over to the fence, I saw him running towards it. When he got close enough, he stopped, panting to catch his breath. With a sad smile, he threw the paper plane he had prepared over the fence, turning away as I read it.

"Prisoner X196705,
I'm afraid I have some bad news.
I shall be going far away, and I can't come back here.
I wish I could stay, and that we could be together outside, but that won't be able to happen.
I'm terribly sorry, and hope that you can keep going.
Love always,
The boy on the other side."

Yes, it was a habit, for us to sign the letters as we did the first time. We didn't even know each other's names yet, but that didn't matter. He was leaving.

Though suddenly
You informed me
That you were going far away, so
Bye-bye! Bye-bye!

My chest tightened, my heart starting to break. Glancing over, I saw him start to walk away. My voice raised loud enough for him to hear me.

"I'll wait!" I cried out, tears streaming down my face. "I'll wait for you forever! Until that day when you come back."

Ah, while in agony
Until today in my life
There hasn't been a day
Where I've cried this much

He stopped for a moment, and I could see him stare over his shoulder, his eyes also shedding the same tears. He said nothing, which allowed me to continue.

"If I don't lose your precious letters that I have..." I said, sniffling, before forcing a smile on my face. "We'll meet again, alright?"

The boy I loved choked back a sob before moving away.

If I had you, whatever my destiny was like
I felt that I could have a smile on my face
I met you, whose name I don't even know
And felt that the future would be bright

As I watched him disappear into the horizon, I broke down, clutching his final letter to my chest. My sobs only soft, I wanted to be able to get out of this place, so I could be with him wherever he went.

I can't call out for you
Chase after you
Or even leave
I'm unable to

-----

Days passed, and no matter how long I waited, he never returned. My tears would always come. Staring out at the open meadow, I wept. By now, the entire camp had realised I was in love with someone who was free. As I retreated to my room, I kept all the boy's letters with me. Suddenly, I heard the general snicker, two soldiers taking hold of me to stop me from moving.

"What do we have here?" he taunted, snatching one of the paper airplanes. "A love letter? You've no chance."

Smirking, he tore the letter up in front of me. My eyes widened, tears flowing freely, as I remembered the boy's smiling face. I lost control, knocking the soldiers from me, before slamming my fist into the general's face. I managed to get in one good hit, and was about to get another one in when the soldiers stopped me. I bit my lip, sobbing softly. I knew what would happen now.

"Guards..." the general mumbled. "Do it..."

I knew where they would take me. I was being led to the gas chamber... to my death.

Finally, my turn has come
You're gone now
But with no regrets in this world
My heart is screaming; why is that?

I was thrown into the dark room, the gas seeping in almost as soon as the door was sealed behind me. It seeped in slowly, and I continued to cry.

I want to live a just a little more
I have no hard feelings
But, in the end
"I want to see you"

The boy's face appeared in my memories, and when I realised he was never coming, I curled up into a ball in the middle of the room.

The days I spent with you won't return
I recall them like they are a revolving lantern
What you gave me, one by one
Became the sustenance for me to live

My hands balled into fists as the gas swirled around me, and I could already feel myself getting light headed. I tried to resist, but I began seeing things, and knew that I was seeing my final destination.

Nearby weeds whirling in darkness
A beautiful flower blooms
We lived in different worlds
But I desperately stretched out my hand

As I continued to think of him, my heart began to burn with a new resolve. My eyes shot open, and I made a quick prayer to the gods, which I hoped would be heard in time.

'Please, God... let me talk to him... once more... before I die...'

Please, if this is the end
Let me speak with that boy
In that small, dark room that was closed
Only that pained voice resounds

My eyes began to grow heavy, my breathing becoming laboured. The entire room was now filled with the deadly gas. Tears stang my eyes. Whether from grief or the gas, I was not certain, but it was then which I realised, my wish wouldn't be granted. When I realised this, I let out a loud scream.

My chest and breathing
Are in pain...
Still, I at least would have...
Liked to have known just...

"Please..." I choked out, vision fading rapidly. "...tell me... your..."

Sweet, eternal slumber took hold of me, and my life came to an end, as I was able to say my last word.

"...name..."

Your name...

The End
