Getting Rogue Squadron ROM to run

Question

Offhand question, the Terms of Service says that questions about games and emulation go in this board. But all the topics are Zelda related. Is this a board only for Zelda-related questions? If so, apologies in advance.

On to the main topic.

I'm quite curious on this, as I owned a copy of Rogue Squadron on N64 and it was awesome. But according to Google, the game uses different microcoding than the rest of the games for N64, and as a result, all the ROMs have awfully butchered graphics and the sound is broken. But it DOES run, albeit unplayably, which makes me wonder if there's plug-ins out there that let it run properly.

So I ask you people, is there a specific combination of plug-ins I need to use, or a different emulator entirely? All the topics and stuff I've found are from 2008-ish, which is why I'm asking here. Has anyone gotten this to work? At all?

I think your safest bet is to try Nemu64 which comes with "Nemu64 Graphics" or otherwise known as Lemmy's D3D8 plugin. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to say. (And I only say Nemu64 because I'm fairly certain the plugin only works with Nemu64)

As for why it won't work, Rogue Squadron uses a custom microcode which is not part of Nintendo's identity list. As a result, plugins are not specifically built for it, therefore there is no support. That's what I can muster, anyways.

As for is this in the right section? Why yes, yes it is. :)

I downloaded it real quick and tried it with about three different plugins for Nemu64. Jabo doesn't load it at all, rice is broken text and missing graphics, and Nemu64 Graphics has this weird squished screen thing going on. Your best bet seems to be the Nemu64 graphics, though. However, there are still odd graphical glitches going on, but it does run.

The only other thing I found on it was this video:

And it still doesn't run it properly, the video was the results I was getting with Nemu64 graphics plugin.

I also got no sound for some odd reason.

I'm by no means an expert on this, though. Someone else will for sure have better answers.

I was getting the same results, but I got the sound running by doing what a comment said on the video you posted; I went into the Debug menu and clicked "Disable audio HLE (2)". The voices are butchered but other than that the sound is perfect. I tried putting the Lemmy D3D8 plug-in into Project64's plug-in folder but I can't start any ROMs because the plug-in failed to initialize.

After that I followed another comment and tried Mupen 64 with it. It doesn't run altogether, which makes it the worst one thus far. It gave me options as to what microcoding to use, which was nice, but none of it loaded the game at all. I tried "playing around with the advanced settings (very helpful), but there's no settings to really play around with.

Guess my best bet is to wait until someone who knows their stuff replies. No offense to you two of course, thanks for the help.

Someone would have to make modifications to a current plugin or make a new one for this game. It uses the N64 RSP mixer 1.0 which by what I've been able to see while looking through the file a little, is exactly what it says it is. It mixes up bits and pieces of other RSPs and just uses all of their best parts. Hence the high detail models and ridiculous draw distance. I too hope someone will get it working.
