Conker
...or something. Dunno how to describe it best, but anyways: Two nights ago, I fell asleep at the beginning of a long song, and eventually I woke up. Though, it was weird... I was asleep, but in a way aware I was(some weird dream state?), and everything was black, silent, then bam; in an instant, the the song I was listening to cut in, as well as the noises of my room, and I was awake. Eyes still closed and everything, but aware of the fact it happened, experiencing consciously going from sleeping to being awake. I have literally never experienced something like this before. Every time I've awoken before, I was completely unconscious, either dreaming or not, and would eventually wake up, but this was weird. :S Sent from my cell phone, because ancient satellites from across the cosmic web are lame. Librarian
Sounds like a strange form of sleep paralysis. It's pretty freakin' scary. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis It's usually linked to recent traumatic events. I've had sleep paralysis a few times before, I thought there was an alien standing in the corner of my room, staring at me, watching me, waiting.... It continued for the next few nights, then stopped as abruptly as it had begun. Eugh, I think I won't be sleeping anymore.
Conker
...I've had sleep paralysis years ago, for a few years on end. I know what it is, and what I experienced certainly doesn't even come close in any way at all. First of all, I've experienced a total lack of being paralyzed. Secondly... actually, that's really all that needs to be said. EDIT: Anyways, sorry about the hallucination you had; the fact that I DID have bizarre experiences with sleep paralysis for a period of time, means I definitely understand what you went through. It sucks, and a lot of the stuff I've seen and heard waking up from it was just frightening. Hell, it even had me FEEL things sometimes. Feel, see, hear; I was lifted off of my bed, and took a fast flight through space, wind blowing on me, and eventually I wound up in a burning place. I saw(albeit, this one was brought on with my eyes closed, but I was awake, and very much paralyzed) it all, felt it all, heard it all. Fuck, it was scary, but many years ago. Also, for those of you ready to call me a liar, you can fuck off and stop typing your reply. That would mean you just haven't experienced such a thing, and would have absolutely NO IDEA how dynamic such an experience can possibly get. BxR
I suffered from sleep paralysis a few years back, it's a pretty frightening experience. On a neat note it's considered an explanation for people who said they've been seeing succubi and incubi. Sleep paralysis in it self doesn't cause hallucinations, auditory or visual; The anxiety and stress can however cause both. Falling asleep with any form of audio on can increase the likelihood of lucid dreaming, and produce some different dreams based on the type of music. This wasn't some dream based on music, though. I literally heard myself wake up, somehow. I dunno how, though, but I'd guess through some kind of weird, blank slate of a dream that somehow just... my head hurts.Sent from my cell phone, because ancient satellites from across the cosmic web are lame. Netsrac
I'm not sure if this counts, but once I woke up (but had my eyes still closed) and heard the door open. I knew somebody was there walking up to me, I heard the footsteps. I then suddenly jumped up and started looking at the direction I thought that person was coming from and then at the door. Nobody was in my room. On the next morning I asked my parents and my brothers if they came into my room at night, but none of them did...
BxR
It sounds like to me you were experiencing hypnagogia, which is the experience of transitional states - so going to and from sleep. This can often cause auditory hallucinations, and other forms of hallucinations that range in what they can cause you to experience. Hypnagogia is during your Stage 1 NREM sleep, it is definitely a neat but frightening experience.
Conker
I'm a little curious how the entire concept of hallucinations even came into this topic? I clearly didn't have any. >.> Sent from my cell phone, because ancient satellites from across the cosmic web are lame.
BxR
Was just stating for those people curious, and other people who have had sleep paralysis. Hypnagogia isn't a hallucination in itself, it's the conscious experience of going from sleeping to not sleeping or vice-versa.

HeavyZ
There are several phases of sleep, the first couple you can be asleep and not even realize it. I'm no expert on it, but I've certainly had my fair share of weird dreams. It could be tied into lucid dreaming as well. Because your music was playing, your brain must have been stimulated by the music (one of the causes of lucid dreaming) That might explain that you were a couple of phases into sleep.. maybe halfway or a little under, along with your brain being over active. I don't know a thing about sleep paralysis. I would share a bad dream experience with you all here, but some of you might label me crazy lol

"Shadow people" some call them. Are they real? Or are they projections of parts of our consciousness? It's widely agreed upon that in dreams, everyone you encounter be they people you know or not, represent aspects of yourself and thus your dreams are but you facing many sides of yourself. So I wonder, with sleep paralysis... are the shadow people but inflexions of our unconscious? Maybe they are us, appearing as these frightening figures who represent all we repress in ourselves. The more secrets you keep, the stronger they become. They know all of your secrets. They are your secrets. Because of this, they seem so foreign, so alien. But in fact, they are you. The shadow to the ego.

Not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that when you see "shadow people", or figures that appear to be humanoid, it's because of the fear you experience from being paralyzed. Many people have reported that if they can think positively and try to control the dream figures, they'll disappear. There doesn't seem to be a link with your inner self or hidden sides, but rather a link with your emotions at the current time.

Fear definitely is a huge factor in their formation, however it is fear pulling from the depths of one's consciousness to appear. There have been symbolic dreams associated with, or that trigger the encounter with my shadow. These dreams, when looking back on them, reflect the dark secrets of my life. This is why I believe the shadows feed on that. They are incarnations of all you repress. By appearing, they are not trying to harm you. Instead, it is your sub- or unconscious emerging as a separate entity to try and inform you of something you need to improve. Last halloween, I relinquished my darkest secrets to my family and my shadow stopped showing up.
