How to get over a major you wanted to take in College? Need advice?

Hey guys, been awhile since I've posted. Well recently, I attended a placement test at a Community College that I've been planning to go to so I could take some video game development classes. I had to retake my placement test which I took i 2010 back when it was called the compass test. I took the test a few days ago and my major problem I have was is with math. I'm not so great at math let alone algebra, because I know you need to know a crap load of math to take these courses but I decided to give it a shot and see if I was good at it. Because I'm pretty good with the tech stuff. My only problem was I was done with the test and I seem to think I have failed the math part of the test, even though it wasn't a pass or fail test.

My main fear is math because I wanted to program as well but I have issues when it comes to math, recently picked up on Python and I was doing great, but when I found out about how much math was involved with programming I just gave up on learning python all together. So I'm pretty stuck in between areas. The school can offer me math classes and math tutors to get to the destination I want to take. I just want to know what should I do if I really can't take a major that I'm after in College... Because an uncle of mine is a really good programmer and he knows how to program in pearl and he was giving me an opinion I shouldn't take game development which crushed my hopes. And I really felt discourage and didn't want to take it anymore. I've always been told I was good at writing and English than my math was, so I don't know what to do from here.

I really want to go to school, but I'm too afraid to find out from the guy who does the test stuff finding out if I can take the classes or not, he said I can take them but I need to work on my pre-algebra, etc. But I think it's too late. Something I've always wanted to take as a kid but couldn't do it because I was screwed out of math in school. I'm not terrible as math, I just suck at equations and formulas, etc. But if I have the proper help I can probably do it right. If anyone has experienced anything like this before, or has any advice. I would appreciate it. :) Sorry for the long story. Nervous about finding about my results.

I think you just need to stop telling yourself you're bad at math and actually try to learn the material instead of giving up as soon as you hear about what is involved.

You seem to have this pessimistic attitude towards learning things if people can't guide you every step of the way. My advice to you is that you should really try learning on your own; buy a math book and seriously read it page by page while trying understand what you're reading. Don't just read a lesson and be like "I think I got it...". You have to test your ability to apply what knowledge you have learned. That is the only way to truly comprehend what knowledge you have acquired.

tl;dr Quit telling yourself you can't do things or that you aren't good at something. Not to sound corny but you can do anything if you really put in the effort to do so. In the end, you really end up doing yourself a huge favor by pushing yourself to try harder and forcing yourself to actually learn.

Reading over my post, I may come off rather harsh but I am giving you honest advice. I'm not going to tell you that you should give up "because life goes on" yada yada. You know what you are truly capable of and I encourage you to try and push those limits or even exceed them.

It's not over yet. You don't know how you did and no one is forcing you to quit or give up.

If you don't want to learn maths, don't take a programming course. It sounds like you didn't properly consider what the course would involve - you can't take a game development course just because you like gaming (not saying that's you). If you're sure this is what you want to do, it's up to you to put in the effort and learn the skills you need.
