What could/should/would Nintendo do to save themselves?

I personally think Nintendo isn't completely fucked; they just need a little time to recover, and stop trying to make many of their games in their flagship games so "derivative" (WE FUCKING GET IT SUPER MARIO 3 EXISTED STOP REMINDING US); in addition, I think their original titles need more exposure, like The Wonderful 101. The WiiU launch wasn't the best, as they should've waited to launch it with their own "must have" title, but if we can wait, I think the WiiU could recover a la the 3DS. The screen controller is "gimmicky", yes, but wasn't there a time where two screens on one portable was scoffed at? With a little more creative thinking on the part of developers, I think the Gamepad could be a welcome addition to the Nintendo camp.

Even then, if they leave the consoles market, I'd be fine if they still focused on portables, since they've shown tha they're good with those... But I have to say that the WiiU is nowhere near as fucked as the Dreamcast was: the Dreamcast was launched in the middle of an on-going console generation and a few years before the next (the WiiU was only a year early, and Sony and Microsoft have also launched consoles a year early); Sega rushed the DC so horribly that batches of games shipped with blank discs and the console was hilariously easy to exploit; and they were already in the red going into the Dreamcast due to the general failure of the Saturn (but AFAIK the Wii sold quite well).

But if Nintendo left the consoles market and went elsewhere, I'd prefer to see them shift to the PC than fall into the hands of one dedicated console manufacturer, as I feel that Nintendo's concept of not needing the best hardware to make a good game could be an advantage in the world of PC gaming. Plus, they could make a goddamn MURDERING by manufacturing official USB versions of their various controllers.

As for Zelda "needing" to be mature: with all due respect, saying that it "needs" blood and swearing to be mature is pretty silly; for example, Majora's Mask had no real modicum of gore, no swearing, and some goofy moments, yet it turned out to be one of the most mature Zelda games yet, due to the doomed nature of Termina and the nigh-impossibility to help everybody. And Wind Waker: Link kills Ganondorf by sticking almost a whole sword in his forehead; did that need blood to be one of the most badass kills in the series?

Not to be mature, but to be realistic (still think most swearing is immature though and should be avoided). It really depends on the graphical style of the game though. I think TP would be the only game in the (3D) series that would benefit from blood effects because it was meant to look realistic and while the N64 games were too, I don't think the N64 would have handled it well. I think there are quite a few themes in the games already that make them feel mature (loss, responsibility, hopelessness etc.) so that side of it isn't an issue for me. Still, I would not say it was needed at all since I find the games more involving than any other series regardless.

Also, I really hope Nintendo does not drop out of the console market because that would mean the end of console gaming for me. I'm not a fan of handheld gaming because I find it too uncomfortable and even if they released games for other systems I don't think it would be the same anymore. Oh well, I still have all my Nintendo consoles because they last forever and never stop working.

To be honest, i don't play games for realism.

Neither do I, at least for non-sports/simulation games; Zelda's supposed to be high fantasy, and too much realism will kill that. I'm not opposed to having some blood in a Zelda title, but I am saying that it's not a necessary addition either to make it good, and also an emphasis on it would probably drag down the game as a whole.

No, it doesn't need it to be mature, you're right. Some people just like to see more common mature themes (whether you like it or not, blood and mild cursing are more common in today's society) in their favorite games. And I already explained how a small amount of blood makes gameplay funner for me, and there's literally nothing wrong with thinking that.

And I'm standing behind my statement of how stupid it is to give one or two enemies in the game blood, but the rest (clearly organic enemies themselves) no blood. It's stupid, it makes no sense. It's either they all have it, or they all don't. That's all there is to it.

Neither do I. Blood effects have nothing at all to do with realism, too, in case you didn't know that.

A lack of blood is also not necessary to stick with. Also, nobody ever said a lack of blood wouldn't make the game good (like me, who just said it'd make combat funner, and you can even read my posts if you want to prove that). Also, nobody ever said anything about emphasis on blood, either. I even said it shouldn't be over-the-top like in other games.Deathbasket:I'm still not seeing what's so immature about mild, lightly-used (as in, it's not every message box, and is hardly ever done in the game) cursing. Or cursing in general. At the end of the day, they're just words. That's all they are. And when used sparingly, I literally don't see the issue.

Regardless if it makes the game more "Mature" or not doesn't change the fact that more people will think of it as less of a kid game than the previous ones. It's not the 1980's or 90's anymore, most people would rather play a game they perceive as mature other than a game they don't.

Hence the title of this thread, more people would like it, more people would buy it.

I'm talking about a generation of gamers who didn't grow up playing Nes, Snes, or N64. People who didn't start loving Nintendo franchise games at an early age. Instead grew up playing PS2, Xbox original, and Xbox360.

Also Majora's Mask was made kid friendly, regardless of how mature it is.

I think a lot of you just don't want the change. I do, I would like to see blood and mild cursing, I don't see why it would be such a big deal, I'm tired of kid friendly Zelda's.

Imagine Perfect Dark without the blood. Call me violent, but it was enjoyable just to shoot a dead NPC while it lied on the floor, watching its bloody head bobble.

Also @ DeathBasket

Cursing is not immature, an overuse of cursing is, and that's not what we're suggesting here. You can glorify cursing using it just right, or you can make yourself and everything you're saying idiotic, it just depends how you use it. I think OoT wouldn't have suffered from a bit of mild cursing, and blood.

It's not like any of are saying Mario should have any of that stuff, that would just be ridiculous, but it would fit into Zelda very well as long as it wasn't overdone.

I meant the art style, not the game. Zelda games were never realistic because, you know, magic and gods and stuff.

Re: cursing - it's just my view. Cursing to insult someone is immature. Cursing for the sake of cursing is immature. Yes, they're just words, but I'd rather see other words in their place because seeing a proper and eloquent use of English these days seems pretty rare. I wouldn't want it to seem like it's only there to cater to the people who think cursing is 'cool' or 'hardcore'. The way I feel about this stems very much from real-life experiences which I don't want to go into. I just don't like it.

They should have called it the Nintendo U, not the Wii U. I bet it would have sold better. Nintendo should not rebrand themselves as "Wii". The Wii sold so well because Nintendo created a message (and a price tag!) that spoke to the average consumer. This same consumer struggles in identifying what a "Wii U" is and as such, opts to keep their Wii instead of replace it with some doohicky add-on. Then there's the gamers who haven't bought one for one reason or another. I don't own one. Maybe part of me actually wants Nintendo to compete graphically with Micro$oft and Sony. Maybe competition is attractive, and in falling behind by some accord, Nintendo has lost interest. Or maybe I just don't play games anymore...

The last console I bought was the Ouya. I have played it for zero minutes.

However! With this being said, Nintendo made so much bank off the Wii, and continues to with the 3DS, that they can more than afford to fail with the Wii U. Hell, they could fail another two consoles and still be in decent shape. Just because one console doesn't work (ehem... hello Virtual Boy) doesn't mean they're out of the race. Nintendo is playing it safe. The Wii U was an experiment, not a revolution. The Wii, like it or not, was a revolution. This was just a step up, not the next big thing. They're playing it slow and safe. I wouldn't expect to see Nintendo franchises on other consoles for at least a decade, and that's if they continue to fail in every way, with returns worse every year. That ain't gonna happen.
