Just a small observation.

I recently picked up a copy of Chrono Trigger on the Wii's Virtual Console and it's really got me thinking about the state of the modern gaming scene.I haven't finished it yet, but it's already one of the most fantastic games I've ever played. The gameplay is amazing, but what truely makes it shine is it's emotional story, it's gorgeous art style and it's strong character designs.I literally just reached

and I've not been left so awestruck by a game in a long time. The lush visuals and the great soundtrack blew me away. After a lot of thought, I think it must be the lack of preparation for it. It's out of the blue - literally. It's a feeling that I've only experienced twice in recent gaming history, once by Shadow of The Colossus and again by Journey, which are two of the greatest games I've ever layed eyes on.The reason I'm posting about this is because I think it's sad that the youth of today grow up playing absolute garbage (at least the majority). I can look back at my childhood with fond memories of Sonic the Hedgehog on my megadrive, or going to my neighbors to play Street Fighter 2. I can reminisce in memories of playing Ocarina of Time with a group of friends, all too scared to step into the shadow temple. What will the kids of today look back on when they're in their 20s, or beyond? Call of Duty? League of Legends?Don't get me wrong, I can see the good things about modern games. Amazing graphics for one. Even games like CoD have their perks (heh, get it?). But I have a genuinely sickening feeling that kids these days don't experience the thrill of playing games with friends, together in the same room. And thank you for sharing your thoughts on the topic. Like you, I have fond memories of playing Rayman, Earthworm Jim, Super Mario, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask and for that I am thankful, the great thing about gaming back then was that I could play with a group of my friends and experience everything all-together, even my parents played these games (they loved it as much as I did.)Gaming took a massive leap down in my book when everything started becoming wireless and online, making it so a group of people, couldn't experience awesome things in the same room anymore, Call of Duty and Left 4 Dead are by far some of the worst games for this (the only good memories of these games are that I could finish them and not remember them.) But back onto your original point, I doubt they will remember great moments in gaming history or from games they have played, the same way people from the 80's and 90's will. I remember playing a 4 way game on the multiplayer from 007 Goldeneye, a time when all 4 players had to be from the same room to play. Even today I prefer the older games to the modern ones.

Chrono Trigger had some of the best music to ever bless the early 90's game scene. I know what you mean too man, I have fond memory's of pixelated blood spewing everywhere as I shot down friends in Perfect Dark. Super Mario Bros 3, various Power Ranger games for Snes, and A Link to the Past made up a good deal of my childhood, and yes even Street Fighter 2 for me as well (by the way I got that game not long ago, Christ that game is so much harder than I remember). It's hard to think how some can truly nostalgia over the new games, as we have with our old ones. I remember when games were good, when they were hard to beat and beating them alone was an achievement, most games didn't have the save option and your only choice was to beat it from start to finish. And oh the sweet joy of playing Mario Paint, and making custom animations to make Mario do the most vulgar things like engage in an act of violent intercourse with a pig, or some other god awful things that me and my friends just couldn't stop laughing at.

 

I play all of those old games with my little sister, she's 6 years old now, I just don't tell her that they are old games lol.

I feel that since I was a kid, and while gaming was a big part of my life it wasn't so much that it was all I did. So, I missed out on a world of old school games that people still reminisce to this day, and I've set out to collect all of those games. I try to show people who've never played certain games how cool this, or that was when they have never heard of it. Most of the time they find it boring (it's very disappointing) though the ones they remember are still cool to them. I no longer live in my hometown in Georgia so I don't even know any real gamers up here other than my younger brother. I just walk to the retro game store close by and chat with them about the old school, and the new school gaming world.

Wow, I'm a strangely prolific drunk, haha!I think you guys have summed it all up pretty well, gaming used to be about playing with your friends, all limited to the small space that your controllers could reach. Nostalgia definitely makes looking back and playing old games better, in my opinion, but I still experience nostalgia from modern games. A great example would be Halo Reach and it's multiplayer. My best friend and I used to set up two TVs next to each other so we could play properly, it was really cool! I guess that's just our old school gamer instincts telling us we need to be in the same room, but hell, it was awesome haha.

I got it for DS, but it just isn't the same since I can't play it on a television. The retranslation lost some of the original's charm too. You pretty much summed up how I feel about older video games. Being able to play with people in the same room.

The DS version was actually my first exposure to Chrono Trigger, and it's still one of my go-tos for my 3DS; it combined the cutscenes of the PSX version with the not-slowness of the SNES version. I didn't mind the DS translation either (in fact, I find Frog's original dialog a bit over the top), and I found the touchscreen menus convenient. The Pokem-err, Monster Arena mode was pretty stupid, but it doesn't take away from the main game.
