Nintendo 2DS...?

Oh, Nintendo 2DS....

Original Poem by SoulofDeity

Pure Brilliance. A slate, a plate, a paperweight.

Sturdy, bolstered, charges in toaster.

Lightweight, simple, and doesn't bend.

In dire moments a shuriken.

It's flat, and gay (in a good way).

A cheap gimmick...wait...that's not optimistic...

$129? I know where they can stick it.

Okay, listen. I know this seems ridiculous for Nintendo to do. Just another gimmick. But here's the thing. I work at walmart in the electronics department, and I know one thing about the 3ds. A lot of parents don't want to pay extra for a feature their kids not only don't use, but are warned NOT to use by almost every game. The problem is, I have DSis and 3DS games returned constantly by people who thought the DSi could play 3DS games. The 3D screens are more expensive to produce, and so more expensive to buy. I know Nintendo has done some stupid shit, (GBA micro, the wii with no internet or backwards compatibility, the visual boy, etc...) but this isn't as bad as some others.

And this thing is just gonna exacerbate this. Nintendo's already got a problem with effectively communicating with customers who aren't already fans - look at the issues they've had, trying to clarify that the Wii U is a separate console and not just a Wii add-on. Now they're introducing a so-called "2DS" next to the "3DS" systems. I can already see people going "Is this 2DS a new thing? I can't seem to find any game for it in stores, only ones for 3DS."

and how do you think parents will react when they're looking for games for their kids 2DS and all they can find is 3DS boxes?

I just don't get it, if Nintendo are having problems with the Wii U, why not focus on that instead of releasing a new handheld system

to compete with their existing product?

You're forgetting the troubles that Nintendo has had with the 3DS. Originally it was priced at $250 USD before they decided to cut the price by $80 and sell it for a loss because of poor sales.

"The reason we do this is, obviously, there's a limit to how low hardware can go from a profitability standpoint," [Reggie Fils-Aime] said. "This device allows us to reach lower consumer price points and still generate some profitability for the company."

$130 USD for what is essentially a 3ds console is a pretty good deal for both parties

I am excited for this.

It has a much, much better form factor than the 3DS, and I don't have to worry about that hardly-ever-works-properly-3D-gimmick.

(what do I mean? well, you know how much games also use the stupid fucking gyroscope gimmick at the same time as the 3D? yeah, combination made in fucking hell, right there).

I was completely prepared to get another 3DS with the XL, but fuck that. I'm getting the 2DS.

As horrendous of a mistake the name is, I am looking forward to this thing. :D

I am in agreement with Branden. The only mistake here is the name. It's cheaper and without the 3D. It's not competition for their own product, its just an alternative for people who don't want to pay for something they aren't gonna use. If people get confused by the name, though, maybe they should do a little bit of reading what a system is before shelling out the money for it, much less shop for it. I don't think dumb should be catered to. Just my two cents.

You obviously have no idea how the 3ds works. It's not a gyro effect, it's parallax screen diffusion. There's a there's a thin filter over the screen that refracts the light such that at a distance of between 1-3ft half the light will only be seen by your left eye and half only by your right, meaning your left and right eyes are seeing the same images but from 2 slightly different angles. This difference confuses the brain into percieving depth.

This is why the 3d effect of the 3ds doesn't require glasses. It doesn't pop out of the screen, it extends into it.

You obviously have no idea what a gyroscope is. It's not a 3D effect, it causes the in-game camera to move when you move the actual console.

DERP.

Not sarcasm, I think the design is atrocious. HOWEVER, this is apparently being targeted towards kids so they can't break the hinges when flailing their handheld after catching a shiny Ponyta in Pokémon X and Y, hence the simultaneous release with the new Pokémon games. Basically, the 2DS was made for Pokémon X/Y.

So we shouldn't really be concerned. I mean, c'mon... Remember the GBA Micro? No one cared, but Nintendo did it anyway.

And to note! I'm not complaining at all. This just corroborates my claim in the "what Nintendo should do" thread about how they can experiment with stuff like this without really suffering. If it fails, the 3DS and Pokémon will still back up the flop. Nintendo is playing it safe because they can.

Why is this thing bigger but less features lol? Also, any one else not want to hold a fucking solid brick with buttons for 2 hours in a long car trip?

Less features? Plural? It lacks 3D, and that's all it lacks.

(if you're referring to a clam shell design, that's not a feature)

Also, it's not a solid brick. It's not even shaped like a brick, or nearly as thick as something that would constitute as a brick.

You're thinking of the Game Gear. And yes, I WOULD play my Game Gear for two hours straight if I had more than two games for it.

I think it's a great idea. The 3D function on the 3DS isn't suitable for young kids, so providing a cheaper model that kids can use is a perfect move by Nintendo. Also, still for kids, the new shape is very child-friendly, like a lot of those kiddie tablets that are going around (even if I think those are dumb).I can't see the practicality in the new shape for adults, though. I certainly wouldn't want to take up more space in my bag when I'm going into university or something.

I do, but I guess I'm just crazy.

Clam shell/flip designs freaking suck.

There's a reason flip phones died, and every other portable device out there (that I know of) doesn't have the same thing going on.

(this is just my opinion, though, so whatever)
