Chrono Trigger- Using the Colosseum, and Other Stuff

So I got Chrono Trigger on the Virtual console recently. I heard about the unused Colosseum building in the 2300 AD map, so I decided to add it with the program Temporal Flux. This is what I came up with.

(It's to the bottom left)

What do you guys think?

It might not fit with the past maps, but... eh. Doesn't really matter right now. I added a dome there just to keep my options open. I'm thinking of making some maps and making the Colosseum (as well as that dome) actual places to play.

I'll probably wait until I get a better feel for CT level design, though.

Edit: Well, you can look at that version as long as you want, 'cause it's not what would eventually be there. Just lost all of that because my computer crashed before I saved.

Grr.

Still, please tell me how I did.

@Lishy - Don't know why that's such a surprise? There is people still hacking NES games even.

Because of the whole C&D fiasco. I thought the CT hacking community was nuked, or something.

That said, the Colosseum does look unfitting even in 2300 AD (Or it may just be the image resolution.) What function will it have?

What function will it have?

I'm thinking that it'll be a sort of museum. It would consist of a futuristic Leene Square during the Milennial Fair (similar to one that's in the game already, but more extensive) with a somewhat twisted version of Gato as a boss. For that I have to learn how to edit enemy pallets and events.

I was also thinking of having commentary spoken by an automated information... thing if you examine certain objects. The commentator would get part of the information wrong, iliciting a correction from your companions (though the robot and the cave lady would just say stuff like 'Wow' or 'Cool' or something).

Or, perhaps I could make the museum idea separate and put it in a Dome ("Museum Dome?" "History Dome?"), while using the Coliseum as something else...

Oh, I've got it! The dome could be a museum and the coliseum could be ruins that were excavated.

The C&D thing was just for the group remaking Chrono Trigger in 3D.

Uhm, no, the Chrono Compendium got one for their almost finished "sequel" Crimson Echoes, a hack of the original CT. That made them shy away from any sort of hacking beyond PAR codes, removed most hacking material from their Wiki (which was probably the most comprehensive source on the subject) and banned discussion of all related things. Or something similar, I don't have the whole sad story memorized.

Alright, just checking! :D

Unfortunately, my regular computer has been recruited for other purposes, so I cannot continue work on this until I get it back.

My official to-do list is this:

-Create a more accurate version of Leene Square using the Dome tileset

-Find a way to edit Gato's pallet (Maybe I'll have to extract his sprite, edit the colors, and re-insert it?)

-Decide whether to have the island area accessible by Sewer Access, or just the Epoch

-Decide where to put the futuristic Leene Square (Thinking a dome rather than the Coliseum)

-Figure out what the Coliseum will be, and build the appropriate maps

I figure that won't be too difficult.

Edit: Huh. You know what? There's supposedly a map of 1999 that appears if you die while trying to beat the end boss. I might recreate the entire planet based on that.

Hmm... maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I've been thinking of a larger-scale hack...

The main character's default name would be Nick. He would be from the year 2025, which would use the 1999 overworld tileset (with the domes and such). It would open in much the same way as the original CT, with Nick waking up and going to a festival. This festival, called the Festival of the Sealed Forest, would commemorate the banishing of evil from the world into a large forest that was enclosed on all sides by mighty stone walls. As he arrives at the Festival (held at the entrance of the Sealed Forest), he runs into a robed figure who tells him to 'watch his back,' as 'fate has a way of sneaking up on you.'

After some exploring, Nick reaches the main entrance to the Forest, where a ceremony involving a sword is taking place. During the ceremony, however, the sword disappears with a flash. The robed figure from before chuckles, and disappears to the left. Nick follows, and comes upon a closed Gate. The robed figure asks Nick, "Are you ready for your destiny?" Promptly after that, the Gate opens and the figure steps inside. Nick, at this point controlled by the game, jumps in after him.

What do you guys think of this as an introduction? I'm still working out the story, but I'm sure I can manage the technical stuff well. I have a guide on memory offsets as well as commands for events, so I'm hoping that this can come to be.

Rough draft of the continent where Nick starts. He lives in the large dome furthest south- Terra Dome. The other dome is called Millennia Dome. The small dome near to Terra Dome is Terra Research Station, and the small building near Millennia Dome is Northern Transit, which provides transportation to other continents. The forest to the north is, obviously, the Sealed Forest. Does the map look too barren?

The World So Far

Woot! I was able to change the pointers for an empty subtile patch in the Apocalypse tileset to the swatch that held the broken domes in 2300 AD. As you can see, we've got some pallet problems, but I did it! Next thing to do is see if that original empty patch had a null pallet shift attatched to it, and repoint it to the pallet for the broken domes...

Oh, and I figured out collision. I never knew why some Layer 1 tiles had other tiles below them; now I know it's for collision :).

Once I get started on and finish the transit system and get my computer back, I'll post a video of how it looks in-game.

I've been working on something for the past few weeks. It's finished, but since I can't record anything with the computer I'm using, I'll have to post it in about a month. In the mean time, here's the map I created for what I was working on. It's supposed to look like a storage room:

I'm thinking that this will be the final configuration for the Present map, which is the year 2054.

The way the continents are configured has some plot importance, as well as that blank spot near the bottom of the map. I don't know; should I put something in that blue space to the north-east? It seems a bit vacant.

I believe that instead of using a ruined dome for the desert on the southern continent, I'll get the Colosseum in there. What are you guys' thoughts?

And please, believe me when I say this: This hasn't been the only thing I've been working on. I have a good idea as to what the story is, and I'm already making some progress in the way of other maps (and, if I can manage to finish it, something a bit more substantial).

That said, I'd like to ask- are there any spriters out there? Anyone willing to try their hand at making custom sprites?
